Welcome New Writers!

We are delighted to announce that Hack Library School has welcomed nine new contributing writers. We were all very impressed with the range of interests and experiences that they will bring to the blog.  Without further ado, here they are!

Alison Glass

Alison is a first year grad student working toward an MSLIS with a school media specialization at Syracuse University.  Because she is perpetually indecisive and persistently curious, this is her third round of graduate school.  Alison was a teacher in a previous life, and is interested in all things education, including information literacy, social media in the classroom, censorship, and the future of school libraries.  She is addicted to Pinterest and chocolate.  Find her at her personal blog Beyond the Bookshelves and on Twitter @alisonjane0306.

Chealsye Bowley

Chealsye Bowley is a first year MLIS and Museum Studies certificate student at Florida State University. Currently she is a Graduate Assistant in Digital Scholarship working with the Scholarly Communication Librarian and HackLibSchool alum Micah Vandegrift. Additionally, she is a Curatorial Assistant at Gadsden Arts Center in Quincy, FL, and volunteers as a FL Student Activist Coordinator (SAC) for Amnesty International. She decided to become a librarian because she is curious about too many things, and is slowing taste-testing her way through librarianship. Follow her on Twitter @chealsye.

Emily Powers

Emily Powers is a Massachusetts native and a MSLIS candidate at Simmons College GSLIS in Boston. Her areas of interest include web services, digital libraries, special libraries, journalism, and web design and development. She spends most of her time riding on trains, reading, and tweeting at @missempowers.

Julia Feerar

Julia Feerrar is a first year master’s student at the School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill. She recently completed her BA in English at Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA, where she also worked as a writing tutor and archival intern. Julia hopes to draw on her English and writing background while pursuing her interests in academic librarianship, research/scholarly communications, and digital humanities. She is an advocate for handwritten letters, but you can correspond with her on Twitter as well (@JuliaFeerrar).

Madeleine Mitchell

Madeleine Mitchell is in her final year as an MLIS student at San Jose State University. Originally from San Francisco, she received her BA in English Literature and an MA in Comparative Literature from San Francisco State University. She is currently doing a long-term internship at San Jose State University’s King Library, evaluating a large, and heretofore ignored, collection of historical children’s materials. Initially, Madeleine’s primary professional interest was youth librarianship, but over the course of her MLIS, her interests diversified to include social media, historical / archival materials and collection management. You can find book reviews, mutterings and random thoughts on her two stealthy, low-traffic blogs The Foggy Foot Review and Twisby Hall, and occasional tweets at @maddieminou.

Max Miller

Max Miller is a second-year MLIS student at the University of Denver, primarily focusing his studies on archives and digital collections. He intends to graduate in June 2013. In the past he has held a variety of jobs, including little league baseball umpire, bookseller, hotel reservations agent and online media editor/manager. He counts books, baseball, and beer as his three deepest non-archival obsessions.

Nicole Helregel

Nicole Helregel is a second-year master’s student at the University of Illinois Graduate School of Library & Information Science. She works as a graduate assistant at the Funk ACES Library doing reference and instruction, web design, exhibits, and special projects. Her main academic interests are reference & instruction, digital tools & resources, archives & special collections, and library marketing & promotion. Steve Ammidown

Steve Ammidown is a first year masters student in the iSchool at the University of Maryland, College Park. He is part of the Archives, Information and Records Management specialization, which he hopes will lead to a career in government records management.  He is always looking for ways to create interest in underappreciated collections. As an undergrad, Steve worked in Special Collections at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, where he became a bit of an expert on their comic book collection. He tweets about anything and everything under the name @stegan.

Thomas Padilla

Thomas Padilla is currently pursuing an MLIS with a Specialization in Data Curation at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. He also works at the Center for Informatics Research in Science and Scholarship and in the Preservation Unit  of the University Library doing fun digital preservation stuff. Prior to moving to Illinois, Thomas worked at the Library of Congress doing digital preservation outreach and education. Thomas maintains diverse interests in digital preservation, data curation, History, Interdisciplinarity, and the Digital Humanities. His work and projects where possible, map to these areas of interest. Thomas blogs at thomaspadilla.org and tweets relatively often @thomasgpadilla.
